Congratulations on getting your braces! The first few days with braces can be an adjustment period, but with the right care and attention, you will soon be on your way to a beautiful, healthy smile. Here are some tips to help you take care of your braces on the day they are placed and in the days that follow.
After you get home from your appointment, please be aware that it takes 24 hours for the glue we placed on the bracket to be 100% effective. During this time, it is important to be extra careful with your braces. Avoid any sticky or hard foods, and use your best judgment when choosing what to eat.
If any of your brackets come out during this time, please give us a call. We will be happy to schedule a follow-up appointment as needed. If the brackets poke the inside of your mouth, you can place the wax on them and massage it in to the bracket contour to reduce irritation.
Here is a list of foods to avoid during the first few days with braces:
- Caramel
- Toffee
- Skittles
- Popcorn
- Ice
- Beef jerky
- Hard candies
- Carrots
- Celery
- Nuts
- Pizza crust
- Chips
- Large pieces of meat

On the other hand, here are some foods that are okay to eat during this time:
- Milkshakes
- Soup

- Meatballs
- Noodles
